Humanizing Our Practice: Cultivating Liberatory Skills for Use In Our Work with College Students

This book is one in which considers liberatory approaches to helping skills that student affairs practitioners can utilize in their work with students. This book approachs this work in ways that allow us to hold space for students, showing care, making room for their full humanity, and embracing liberatory ways of engagement because we understand that systems of oppression impact all of usThis book is the product of a unique and collaborative learning journey undertaken by students enrolled in two consecutive sections of CSSA 530: Fundamentals of Counseling at Oregon State University taught during Springs 2024 and 2025. Designed as a collaborative community of inquiry, the course invited students to engage deeply with counseling skills to support college students through a liberatory lens, not only as learners but as co-creators of knowledge.Rather than concluding the course with traditional individual assignments, we embarked on a collective scholarly endeavor: to write and publish a book together. Each student contributed one or more chapters or sections, drawing from their research, reflections, and critical engagement with course materials and discussions. The result is a diverse and dynamic volume that reflects a multiplicity of voices, perspectives, and scholarly approaches. Read more
